🚀 Getting Started

Downbeat4-4 is organized around Projects and Bands. A Project is your workspace (usually one per organization or studio). Each Project contains one or more Bands. All your songs, setlists, shows, and practices live under a specific Band.

  1. 1
Create an account — tap Sign Up on the login screen. You can sign up with email/password or with your Google account.
  2. 2
Create or join a Project — after signing in you'll be prompted to create a new project or enter an invite code to join an existing one. Projects are your billing unit. One subscription covers your entire Project.
  3. 3
Create a Band — tap Create Band on the Home screen (admins only). Give it a name and an optional description.
  4. 4
Invite band members — go to the Band's settings page (gear icon in the top-right corner) and share your invite code or link. Members join by entering the invite code at the project selection screen.
  5. 5
Add songs and start building setlists — tap Songs on the band dashboard to add your repertoire, then use Setlists to organize songs for upcoming gigs.
Offline support: The iOS app stores all your data locally and syncs automatically when you're online. You can use Downbeat4-4 in airplane mode during a show — your setlists and chord charts are always available.

🎵 Songs

Songs are the foundation of everything in Downbeat4-4. Each song stores musical metadata, notes, and optional chord chart documents.

  1. 1
Open the Songs list — tap Songs on the band dashboard or in the side drawer (hamburger menu, top-right).
  2. 2
Add a song — tap the + button. Fill in the title, artist, key, tempo (BPM), time signature, and duration. Use the AI assistant (chat icon) to auto-fill these fields from the song's name.
  3. 3
Attach chord charts — open a song and tap Add Document to upload PDFs, images, or other files. Documents are stored in the cloud and cached locally on iOS.
  4. 4
Add performance notes — the Notes field on each song is shown during Performance Mode. Use it for cues, transitions, or any per-song reminders.
Tip: Tap the search icon on the Songs screen to quickly filter by title, artist, or key.

📋 Setlists

Setlists let you order songs for a gig or practice, add set breaks, and configure per-song metronome and MIDI settings.

  1. 1
Create a setlist — tap Setlists on the band dashboard, then the + button. Give it a name.
  2. 2
Add songs — tap Add Song and pick from your repertoire. You can also add Set Breaks as named dividers between sets.
  3. 3
Reorder songs — press and hold the drag handle on any row to drag it to a new position.
  4. 4
Configure per-song options — tap a song row in the setlist to toggle the metronome, set a custom BPM override, or assign a MIDI preset for that song.

🎤 Shows

Shows represent booked gigs. Each show has a date, venue, downbeat time, setlist, and optional financial tracking (expenses and payment splits).

  1. 1
Create a show — tap Shows on the band dashboard (or via the side drawer), then the + button.
  2. 2
Fill in show details — date, venue name, downbeat time (when the first song starts), and status (Confirmed / Tentative / Cancelled).
  3. 3
Attach a setlist — link any existing setlist to the show. Tapping the show card on the dashboard will then launch Performance Mode directly.
  4. 4
Track financials — scroll down in the show detail to add expenses and define payment splits among band members.
Tip: Upcoming shows appear on the Band dashboard so your next gig is always one tap away.

🥁 Practices

Practices work like shows but for rehearsals. Link a setlist to run through songs in order, with the metronome keeping the tempo.

  1. 1
Create a practice — tap Practices in the side drawer, then the + button. Set the date, time, and optional location.
  2. 2
Attach a setlist — link a setlist to run songs in sequence. Tapping the practice card launches Practice Performance Mode.

▶️ Performance Mode

Performance Mode gives you a full-screen view optimized for the stage: large song info, chord charts, metronome, and MIDI control — all in one place.

  1. 1
Launch — tap a show or practice card on the band dashboard (the card must have a setlist attached), or open a setlist and tap Start Performance.
  2. 2
Navigate songs — swipe left/right or tap the forward/back arrows to move between songs. The current song name, key, and tempo are shown prominently.
  3. 3
View chord charts — if a song has documents attached, a PDF viewer opens automatically. Pinch to zoom; swipe pages.
  4. 4
Metronome — toggle the metronome from the toolbar. The tempo is taken from the song's BPM (or the setlist override). Tap the BPM indicator to tap-tempo a new value.
  5. 5
MIDI auto-send — if MIDI is enabled and a preset is assigned to the current song, Downbeat4-4 sends the program changes and control changes to your connected device automatically when you navigate to that song. iOS only. Requires a Bluetooth or USB MIDI interface.
Keep the screen on: Performance Mode requests a display wakelock so your phone won't lock during a show. Make sure the app has permission if prompted.

🎹 MIDI Presets

MIDI Presets let you send program changes and control changes to hardware instruments, effects pedals, and synthesizers — automatically when each song starts in Performance Mode. iOS only.

  1. 1
Connect a MIDI interface — plug in a Bluetooth MIDI adapter or USB MIDI interface (with a Lightning/USB-C adapter) before opening the app.
  2. 2
Define MIDI devices — go to MIDI Presets on the band dashboard and tap Manage Devices. Add each physical instrument with a name and MIDI channel.
  3. 3
Create a preset — tap + in MIDI Presets. Name the preset and add per-device program changes (patch number) and optional control changes (e.g., reverb level, volume).
  4. 4
Assign to a song — open the song detail and select the MIDI preset in the MIDI section, or assign it inside a setlist's per-song settings.

🤖 AI Song Assistant

The AI assistant helps you find song metadata (key, BPM, time signature, duration) and suggests songs for your setlist. Powered by Google Gemini.

  1. 1
Open the assistant — tap the chat icon on the band dashboard or on the Songs screen.
  2. 2
Ask about a song — type something like "What key is Superstition by Stevie Wonder?" or "Add Sweet Home Chicago to my setlist."
  3. 3
Confirm suggestions — the assistant presents an editable card with the song data it found. Review and adjust any fields, then tap Add to Songs to save it.
Data sources: The assistant first queries the GetSongBPM database for structured metadata, then falls back to Google Search grounding via Gemini for less common songs.
